Learn how the eastern view of balance is essential to your health in the modern world.
The forty hour work week is slowly but surely disappearing, with average Americans spending upwards of 60-80 hours per week at their jobs. Studies have shown that Americans on average spend more time at work that any other developed nation in the world-even Japan! On top of this, with rapid technological breakthroughs such as cell phones, wireless internet, and Blackberries, more and more time is being focused away from yourself and your family. These changes virtually require adults looking for a healthier life to develop time management skills.
I myself have experienced this kind of time constraint. As the proud owner and head instructor of Cutting Edge Tae Kwon Do in Saratoga Springs I teach martial arts and life skills oriented Summer Camps for children, evening Tae Kwon Do Classes for Children, Teens and Adults, as well as a separate Combat Hapkido program, with a Women's Rape Prevention and Self Defense Course on Saturdays. It can sometimes be difficult for me to remember that life is not one dimensional.
Yet our careers or our children cannot be a total representation of who we are and what we do. Asian cultures incorporate the Yin and Yang philosophy into all parts of their lives. The most basic interpretation of the Yin and Yang is about BALANCE. Everything in the universe eventually works to a state of homeostasis or balance-the orbit of planets, the ecosystem, our bodies and our minds. The mind, body and spirit are totally entwined where each piece feeds off of the other. With our culture's current focus, we must remember to find time in our busy schedules to get involved in activities that help balance out our mind, body and spirit. We at Cutting Edge Tae Kwon Do understand these concepts, and try to offer a well balanced program that leaves each student refreshed both mentally and physically.
