A Way of Life

The majority of people who decide to give martial arts a try typically are interested in self defense or physical fitness. What many come to learn is that martial arts is much more than just learning to defend oneself. Martial arts is a way of life, a way of being, and a way of relating to the physical and mental world around us. Through perseverance and dedication, we do not merely participate in martial arts, but become martial artists. Perseverance transforms an activity from something that we do to something that we are!

Our school, Cutting Edge Tae Kwon Do, teaches two distinct styles of martial arts: Tae Kwon "Do" and Combative Hap Ki "Do." Both styles originated in South Korea over a thousand years ago and both styles evolved through close quarters military tactics as well as cultural ideology. Both styles end in the word "Do," which translates to the "The Way." The way in not only the way of self-defense but the way you live your life. These styles established codes of conduct that practitioners must live by. Tae Kwon Do came up with 6 major ideals: Modesty, Courtesy, Integrity, Self Control, The Indomitable Spirit, and PERSEVERANCE! When one develops the mind, body and spirit together, one can then say that they are a true martial artist. This individual will possess a great deal of inner confidence, a positive, winning attitude, treat all people no matter what race, creed, or ethnicity with the highest respect, and be able to achieve any goal that they set for themselves because there is no obstacle too big to handle. A true martial artist can execute their skills with great precision and accuracy, but never have to show it off to others or use the techniques maliciously.

Just over two years ago, I made a decision that has changed my life and now hundreds of others forever. One night, while I was training with my instructor, I sat down and discussed the idea of opening up a martial arts school in Saratoga Springs. That discussion turned into our school only one month later. We grew out of our first space in the West Hill Plaza after 18 months, and currently reside in a state of the art 5000 sq. ft. facility in the plaza. Our dedication to our students and families are paying off. I believed from the first day and still do to this day, that if we provide the best possible experience for each individual student that comes in our doors, we will become successful. Success starts in the mind, and perseverance will make it a reality.
