Courage and Perseverance

Category: Opinion
Published: November 2006

To reach for the stars and to fulfill ones dreams provides one with the measure of success that we build our lives upon. Whether it is the winning touchdown drive or the completion of your college degree or the opening of your first gourmet restaurant, we feel that sense of accomplishment and aspire towards greater goals in our future.

Who of us do not remember our defeats? Men and women of undeniable purpose are very rare. The world is full of bashful people who cannot commit to anything and live their lives in the shadows. Every so often a man or woman with a different temperament is born. They are born for victory because they persist in their purpose. Never to give up is the secret of success. The encouragement to persevere lies deep in our nature. No one knows until they have tried how much they can accomplish. Nor how much more he would have had accomplished had he not quit and ceased from trying. Those who persist are the only ones who know what is worth seeking after. Everything has its price. Everything that the mind conceives possible it can do. If someone fails and grows fainthearted, you only have yourself to blame. The small obstacles in our path will bend and conform to the greater purpose. Every great action is first perceived in the mind. Action is only the realization of that thought.

You have seen the commercials of Tiger Woods planning his shot and just missing the hole by an inch, because he forgot the earth's rotation. He visualizes every shot; he first sees it in his mind and then applies his many hours of practice and labor to accomplish his goal. And he masterfully prepares for each hole of each tournament every day. When his father, who was his best friend, died he was devastated. He was crushed. But he won his next tournament, he did not give up. He pulled himself up by his bootstraps and went on to win his next 6 tournaments.

Life is a game of skill. Let us remember that our victories must first be won in the mind, and then these victories that we seek should turn up as we desire.

Success is the culmination of a well devised plan which is completed with hard work to overcome obstacles and failures through perseverance. Throughout all of our lives we can remember our successes and our failures. With each of our failures we hope to learn from our errors and not repeat them in the future. Some of us learn from our mistakes and reflect upon that difficult time to gain wisdom. When you have known defeat the future victory is much sweeter. Quitting is not an option. There have been times in our lives when we just do not want to continue. We have all faced adversity, and failure of some sort. Those who have glided through life with little or no challenges watch the world go by and hope that someone else will carry the ball. That is not why we were put on this earth
