Saratoga National Park

Category: Arts & Entertainment
Published: November 2006

On November 17, 1777, the most powerful military in the world suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of an irregular army comprised of farmers, clerks, and young boys on the field of Saratoga.

Almost 250 years later, the National Park commemorating this event, considered by the New York Times Magazine to be "the most crucial battle of the last 1000 years" is getting a facelift.

Chief among them is a new timeline exhibit that enhances the older displays with original battlefield artifacts, soldier's journal entries, a fiber optic map that helps visualize the troop movements during the battle, and dozens of period images.

Congressman Sweeney, who appropriated approximately $300,000 for the renovation, has also worked with Sienna College and the American Institute for American Revolutionary War Studies to create a certificate program for students studying the subject in the area. There are also plans to recreate the trenches and redoubts (temporary log enclosures for protection against charging troops) in their original locations in order to enhance the Field's sense of action and authenticity.
