Bloomers: An American Bistro

A new restaurant opened in Malta this past April called Bloomers: An American Bistro. After dining there recently, I knew I had to share my experience with my readers.
Bloomers has a certain eclectic charm. As you pull up, it looks like a 1950's diner. You can't help but wonder what the inside looks like. The interior is great! It is a cross between a cozy 50's diner and a sleek, contemporary restaurant. Upon entering, the bar area is the first thing you see. The bar is light wood with black accents and seating. The walls behind the bar are metal, like1950's diner walls. The entire restaurant is a wonderfully artistic blend of old and new.
Bloomers is a relaxed, casual atmosphere where you can come in to dine in your old comfy shorts and still be able to enjoy a fine meal. When we were there, some people were a little dressed up, and others weren't. Whenever you go to Bloomers, I can pretty much guarantee that blues music will be playing in the background. Mike Bauer, the owner of Bloomers, is quite a blues aficionado.
As much as I liked the dcor, I liked the food even more. My dinner companion and I started our dining experience with the soup of the day, red pepper and corn chowder. The chowder was delicious. It had a wonderful flavor and consistency. We then shared an Alaskan king crab cocktail with avocado, red onion and tomato in a cilantrolime vinaigrette. The crab was fresh and delectable, and the avocado mixture was a superb compliment. For our entrees, I ordered the filet mignon with white truffle bordelaise, crushed potatoes and seasonal vegetables.
My diner companion had the cioppino, a stew of shrimp, scallops and clams in a light saffron broth. Both meals were first rate. My filet mignon was tender and succulent. The white truffle red wine reduction was outstanding. The fresh green beans, carrots and potatoes were prepared beautifully. The cioppino was also a hit. The shellfish was extremely fresh, the noodles were high quality, cooked to perfection, and the saffron broth was just right. We ended our yummy evening by sharing a chocolate bourbon pecan tart, warmed and topped with luscious vanilla ice cream. It was a truly heavenly treat. We both attacked it with a vengeance. Even the coffee was rich and full-bodied.
The prices at Bloomers are right in line with other fine restaurants in our area. Our service was impeccable. Joe, our waiter, took very good care of us, and the portions were ample.
If you want to enjoy fine cuisine in a new, fun setting you need to give Bloomers a try.
