Mini dental implants are rapidly becoming routine in offices that are current with up-to-date technology. All dental implants allow for the replacement of missing teeth without any damage being done to the neighboring teeth. They are also used to stabilize dentures, making false teeth feel secure and natural.
These smaller-diameter implants are easier to place. There is no need to drill a large preliminary hole, because the smaller size allows for direct screwing into the bone. In addition, there is significant immediate stabilization, and the implant can function the same day that it is placed in the mouth. You can have implants placed in the morning and eat lunch that afternoon. No incision allows patients who may have bleeding issues to be candidates.
Another advantage is having all of the treatment in one office. Most mini dental implants are placed by general dentists. One more advantage is a significant reduction in the cost of these implants and the restorations placed on them, which can result in a significant savings.
However, because of their small size, the placement of mini dental implants in some prominent areas can make them look less natural than regular implants. Also, since their size is smaller than a tooth root, they often cannot be placed at the time of tooth removal, and therefore a temporary needs to be used. They have been approved by the FDA, but have not had the wealth of research done on them like the standard ones have had.
